Abstract Due to poor patient condition and the high risk associated with procedure, colonoscopy is rarely performed in intensive care unit (ICU). It indicated for ICU patients suspected ischemic colitis, decompression of colonic distension, or lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage. usually have more co‐morbidities higher mortality rates than other inpatient patients. Association Between Serum Electrolyte Disturbances and Glasgow Coma Scale Score in Patients With Diffuse Axonal Injury

Background: Appropriate clinical measures to prevent secondary brain damage in traumatic brain injury are of critical importance. Objectives: This study aims to investigate the relationships between serum electrolyte disturbances and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score in patients with Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI) at the time of admission and discharge. Materials & Methods: In this retrospective cr...

Comparison of the Full Outline of UnResponsiveness and Glasgow Liege Scale/Glasgow Coma Scale in an intensive care unit population.

BACKGROUND The Full Outline of UnResponsiveness (FOUR) has been proposed as an alternative for the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)/Glasgow Liège Scale (GLS) in the evaluation of consciousness in severely brain-damaged patients. We compared the FOUR and GLS/GCS in intensive care unit patients who were admitted in a comatose state. METHODS FOUR and GLS evaluations were performed in randomized order in...

Acid Base Electrolyte Imbalance and Survival Outcome of Low Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) patients in the Medical Intensive Care Unit

Background: Acid-base and electrolytes disorders are commonly seen in critically ill patients. Electrolyte abnormalities were the most frequent extra cranial occurrence of altered consciousness. There are multiple studies which reported altered survival outcome in low GCS patient and some did not. Aims: To assess the survival outcome of acid-base electrolyte imbalance associated with low GCS pa...

Validity of the FOUR score coma scale in the medical intensive care unit.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the validity of the FOUR (Full Outline of UnResponsiveness) score (ranging from 0 to 16), a new coma scale consisting of 4 components (eye response, motor response, brainstem reflexes, and respiration pattern), when used by the staff members of a medical intensive care unit (ICU). PATIENTS AND METHODS This interobserver agreement study prospectively evaluated the use of ...
